Tragic Sparrowhawk Frozen Solid Taking Flight In -35C

A Turkish man worried that a sparrowhawk might be ill when it did not fly away as he approached was shocked to discover it had frozen solid.

The unfortunate bird fell victim to the extreme cold in the Saydim village of Corum province, located in the Black Sea region of Turkey where temperatures have plunged to minus 35 degrees Celsius.

This video footage was shot after the sparrowhawk was spotted frozen to the wall in the courtyard of a local mosque, upsetting many of the visitors.

The video shows the unfortunate bird with its wings partially open as if it had been preparing to take flight, with the moment then frozen in time as the icy cold claimed its victim.

The bird is just the latest victim of the Siberian cold front which is hit the region recently. 

Several days ago also a frozen fox was found in the Van province of Turkey. 

After the video of the sparrowhawk was posted, online commentator Recep Sahin said: “this is truly heartbreaking, it is very saddening.” 

And Sinan Mumcu said: “this footage tore my heart apart, I am very sad to see this.”
