Franzolini told reporters: “”We were very scared, you immediately think about the tornado catastrophes you see in films: the biggest fear was that something from all the wood and plastic that was flying hit us at that speed.”

Local media report 60 of the 98 gazebos at the resort were uprooted in the tornado and the owner of the resort, Miguel Velarde, told local media: “If it was midday, it would have been a tragedy.”

He confirmed no tourists had been at the beach at the time and estimated the damage caused at between 500,000 and 600,000 ARS (10,500 GBP and 12,600 GBP).

Jorge Damato, the head of the Civil Defence of Pinamar said the winds had reached over 80 kph (50 mph).

Flooding was also reported but nobody was injured in the tornado.
