Tokyo Shop Takes 3D Pictures Of Faces And Sells Incredibly Realistic Masks

This Tokyo shop has created a bizarre niche market by paying people to take 3D pictures of their face and then selling a realistic full-face mask of their image.

The Kamenya Omoto (Omoto Mask Shop) is based in the Japanese capital Tokyo and specialises in masks.

The shop also offers ranges from modern Japanese mask makers as well as other styles from different regions.

One of their most recent headline-making projects involves paying people JPY 40,000 (GBP 292) to take high-resolution 3D pictures of their faces.

The shop’s owner Shuhei Okawara said they create the masks by mixing 3D picture mapping with high-resolution images to give them the realistic look.

The shop then sells the masks for JPY 98,000 (GBP 716).

Photos show the ultra-realistic mask appearing just like the face of its wearer.

If one particular mask proves especially popular among clients, Okawara says he will give the person who modelled it royalties, however, their identity will remain secret.

The shop has since been flooded with people interested in modelling for the masks, but Okawara refuses to take images of anyone under the age of 20.
