The twister was first spotted just after midday during a stormy spell and wreaked havoc about one kilometre from the centre of Devrekani.

The tornado twisted its way over an area of mostly farmland, affecting some fields, according to reports.

The whirlwind lasted about 20 minutes, 1 km away from the center of Devekani district, Kastamonu province, Turkey

The local authorities warned residents to remain indoors and fortunately no one was reported as injured during the twister’s period of activity.

Many citizens filmed the rare phenomenon with their phones and uploaded the images to social media where they have been widely circulated.

A Tornado is a rotating column of air that is in contact with both the earth and usually a cumulonimbus cloud.

They differ to waterspouts, which occur over a body of water and is connected to a cumulus congestus cloud, a cumuliform cloud or a cumulonimbus cloud.

Aside from one occurring over water and the other over the ground, waterspouts are considered weaker than tornadoes because of the reduced force of friction. However, they do occasionally move inland and become tornadoes.
