Starving Locals Forage Through Tip For Rotten Meat

This is the shocking moment dozens of poverty-stricken residents forage through a rubbish tip to pull out chunks of rotten meat dumped by a supermarket.

The shocking footage took place in the resort city of Mar del Plata on Argentina’s Atlantic coast, only 15 minutes from the plush city centre.

The video was filmed by journalist Carlos Walker and uploaded to social media where it has been widely shared.

In the clip, dozens of people are seen foraging through the landfill and pulling out pieces of rotten chicken.

For over 10 years, the city has experienced the highest rate of unemployment during the months of January and February in all of Argentina.

The problem reportedly leads to increased poverty and hunger in the resort city.

According to local media, groups of people from deprived areas forage for food in the landfills every day.

The starving residents scour for leftovers thrown out by local supermarkets because the food has passed its expiry date.

It is estimated that hundreds of residents are forced to live this way due to the economic crisis, according to reports.

Many people hope to find recyclable items they can receive money for as well as other objects to possibly sell.

If they find food, many of them cook it right there in the landfill.

Poverty-stricken resident Antonio Indarte told local media that families with children are living at the rubbish tip.

He added: “We often eat what the shops throw away. We sometimes come across chicken or meat.”
