This is the hair-raising moment a man discovers a live cockroach crawling inside a sealed packet of bread he had bought online.
The incident took place in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, China, with the video posted on 25th October.
Footage shows a black cockroach moving inside an individually sealed pack of Baicaowei-brand bread as the buyer, identified as Mr Jia, presses the apparently airtight bag and turns it in his hand.
Mr Jia told local media that he had ordered a box of Baicaowei bread online on 22nd October and received it on the 24th.
He said he ate one or two packs before noticing the live insect inside another sealed bag when he went to get more.
He said: “I was startled at first. After a few seconds, I realised what I was seeing and started taking photos and a video for evidence.”
Mr Jia said that when he contacted the platform’s customer service, they initially offered him only a refund.
He said: “I was not satisfied. I felt they did not recognise the seriousness of the problem, did not sincerely apologise, and did not respect consumers.”
He then demanded compensation of CNY 1,000 (GBP 105) and an official apology letter addressing the product quality issue and the poor customer experience.
Mr Jia claimed that after his video went viral on 25th October, someone claiming to represent the Baicaowei manufacturing plant contacted him offering CNY 2,000 (GBP 210) to delete the video, which he refused.
He added that the company later asked him to send the contaminated bread back for inspection, but he said he would only consider doing so once his two demands were met.
Mr Jia said he had thrown the affected pack on the ground after filming, and when he later went back to look at it, the cockroach had bitten through the plastic and escaped.
He said: “This doesn’t affect the fact that I have the initial evidence. In fact, it proves the cockroach was alive.”
A spokesperson for Baicaowei’s food production partner, Hangzhou Haomusi Food Co. Ltd, said the company had checked surveillance footage from the relevant production batch and found no irregularities.
The spokesperson added that they had contacted the consumer and offered CNY 2,000 (GBP 210) in compensation.
