Shopkeeper Fined 440 GBP After Cat Scratches Customer

A shop owner has been fined 440 GBP and narrowly avoided jail after an angry woman customer was scratched on the face by a stray cat that she kicked when he told her her order was not ready.

Computer repair shop owner Ahmet Dilaver was initially given a two-and-a-half-year jail sentence after the incident in which a stray cat that he occasionally fed scratched the woman customer. It had scratched her face after flying through the air when she kicked it

But a Court of Appeal in province of Samsun in northern Turkey that confirmed the conviction but agreed to convert the prison sentence into a 3,000-TRY (440-GBP) fine.

The incident happened in 2016 when a customer went into Dilaver’s repair shop to collect her tablet after handing it in for repair some weeks earlier.

The female customer is said to have become angry when Dilaver told her the device had not yet been returned from another repair shop in Istanbul.

Dilaver says a stray cat which he often pets in the shop began walking towards the customer, who then kicked it into the air in a fit of rage. It then scratched the customer’s face as it was flying through the air and the woman later filed charges against Dilaver.

The repairman was then taken to court and handed a two-and-a-half year prison sentence for “reckless injury”.

Dilaver appealed the sentence but it has been upheld, stating that the shop owner was “responsible” for the injury as he cat regularly visited his shop.

Dilaver said he did not understand why he was being punished, saying the customer had provoked the cat.
