This is the moment the Russian Army flaunts it total war capabilities using a satellite navigation system to coordinate attacks on targets during military exercises that included tanks, helicopters and howitzers.
The military exercises involved the Yelninsky Motorised Rifle Division of the Western Military District and they were held at the Mulino range in the western Russian region of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
In the footage, howitzers and truck-mounted rocket launchers are seen firing missiles into the air as helicopters fly overhead.
The targets are shown being destroyed on the GLONASS satellite navigation system before the tanks roll in with foot soldiers behind.
According to the Russian MoD, the Western Military District used 2S19 Msta self-propelled howitzers which are based on the T-80 tank hull.
A MoD spokesperson said: “Using the modernised guidance and fire-control system, we were able to achieve accuracy on targets at a rate of 10 rounds per minute per gun.”
“In total, over 70 artillery weapons were involved in the exercise, including Tornado-G rocket systems and Orlan unmanned aerial vehicles for aerial reconnaissance and fire adjustment.”
The 2S19 Msta is a 152.4 mm self-propelled howitzer which entered service in 1989 as the successor to the 2S3 Akatsiya.
The 9A52-4 Tornado is Russia’s newest universal multiple rocket launcher. It was designed as a lightweight and universal version of the BM-30 Smerch.
The Orlan10 is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the Special Technology Centre (STC) in Saint Petersburg for the Russian Armed Forces.
