A restaurant owner is taking a customer to court after he ordered a bottle of champagne and refused to pay for it when he got the bill for EUR 13,000.
The man had gone with a group to the posh Mon Amie Maxi brasserie in Frankfurt, Germany, in May last year.
After consulting with the sommelier, the waiter had offered the group a six-litre Methuselah bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne for EUR 13,000 (GBP 11,000).
According to the restaurant owner, the man from Dusseldorf was happy with the suggestion and enthusiastically accepted the offer.
He allegedly uncorked the bottle himself.
But he claims he got the shock of his life when he was handed the bill at the end of the meal.
He protested that the waiter had told him EUR 1,300 (GBP 1,100) and not EUR 13,000.
The restaurant owner is now taking the man to court.
The court in Dusseldorf will now have to decide if the waiter really did give him the wildly wrong price or if the man misheard – or claimed to mishear – him.
The civil court case is scheduled to be heard on 15th May.
