This is the moment a rare vampire deer is spotted by city residents who find it stuck in a gate and bleating loudly.
The adult male Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis inermis) is known as a vampire deer in English-speaking regions due to its distinct lack of antlers and prominent tusks.
The screaming deer was spotted in the city of Jilin, which is in north-eastern China’s Jilin Province, while stuck in the gate of a local lumberyard on Monday (4th May).
According to the Hongshi Forestry Bureau, which oversees timber manufacturing, the animal was first seen by staff members on 1st May but mistaken for a more common species.
It was fed corn for three days until it drew the attention of local residents when it tried to escape but trapped itself in the metal gate.
In the clip, the deer is seen bleating loudly as staff members surround it and grab the animal’s hind legs, which rescuers said were injured during the incident.
Wildlife officials later freed the deer and took it to a rescue station for treatment, reports said.
Forestry bureau surveyor Wu Jianfeng said it was the first time a live water deer was spotted in Jilin Province.
They are categorised as a Class II state-protected species, while they are deemed ‘Vulnerable’ by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Mr Wu said the deer was not seriously harmed and would be released back into the wild.
Chinese water deer were first introduced to Britain as early as the 1870s.
A 2005 survey estimated that more than 2,100 Chinese water deer now lived in the United Kingdom, mostly in the south-east.
