Pregnant Giraffe Has Heart Attack During 48-Hour Labour

Singapore Zoo’s beloved pregnant giraffe Lucy has died of a heart attack together with her unborn calf during a gruelling 48-hour labour.

The 14-year-old giraffe died at around 7pm on 5th February at Singapore Zoo in the island city-state of Singapore just off southern Malaysia as vets tried to operate to remove the baby.

The zoo announced that Lucy was pregnant with her first calf in April last year and had decided to operate to remove the baby after vets said there was no chance any longer that it would survive.

Wildlife Reserves Singapore said on social media: “During the process to remove the baby from Lucy, she went into cardiac arrest and despite more than 10 minutes of attempting to resuscitate her, the effort was in vain.”

They added: “Based on the time and consultation with other giraffe experts, our vets knew that the chances of survival for the calf were near zero.

“Unfortunately, Lucy suffered from a cardiac arrest during the procedure and has crossed the rainbow bridge.”

According to reports, Lucy shared her enclosure with her 14-year-old mate Marco and another male which was born in 2015 to Marco and Roni before her death in April 2017.

Lucy arrived in Singapore in 2005 from The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem, Israel.

Netizen ‘Tan Hsien-Li’ said: “I am so sorry to hear this. My condolences to all her friends at the zoo who were taking such good care of her. Heartbreaking sadness.”
