Porcupine’s Night Out From Zoo

Notoriously prickly customer makes a break for it after escaping from a zoo in Russia.

The porcupine, more naturally at home in the Americas, Africa, and Asia, was found padding through the streets of Mistolovo, Leningrad Oblast, on 2nd August.

And while in the wild it likes to eat green plants, berries, and even tree bark, on its nocturnal walkabout it seemed more concerned about trying to get into a cafe.

Passersby captured videos of the creature as it wandered around the city while they laughed in disbelief and baffled local dogs started barking.

Mercifully the dogs knew enough to keep back as porcupine quills are so painful they’re known to keep even big cats in the wild at bay.

Kind-hearted animal lovers offered it food and kept it safe until keepers from its home in Ohta Park came to collect it.

Social media platform Telegram users clocked up more than one million views of the clips.

One user ‘Gucci’ said: “Nice, at least it got to stretch its legs a bit – it’s not all about sitting in a cage all the time.”

Footage shows a porcupine walking in a residential area in Mistolovo village, Leningrad Oblast, Russia on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024. The animal escaped from the zoo. (Newsflash)

Then ‘Feeling a bit cringy’ commented: “Bored, just going out to stretch those quills…”

And ‘Avito’ added: “This hedgehog of yours has gotten quite wild!”
