CCTV shows the incident in the Gulveren neighbourhood of the Mamak district, in the Turkish capital of Ankara, on 27th July.
The footage shows the elderly man leaning towards a stationary car to confront the occupants as the two girls stand close by on the pavement after they were reportedly harassed.
One of the men jumps out and rains kicks and punches on him until he drops to the ground, while the girls back away in fright.
Other passersby can be seen intervening to try to stop the violence.
The victim was named as Nurettin Ercayan, 72, a retired man who had just left his home when he noticed what was happening.
The two men had allegedly trailed the 16-year-olds by car as they walked along the pavement that evening before pulling up alongside them and shouting comments.
The girls answered back and an argument broke out, at which point Ercayan stepped in and confronted the younger men in the vehicle.
He was taken to hospital and discharged after treatment, and both he and the girls he had tried to protect filed formal complaints.
Officers tracked down and detained the two suspects, who were freed after giving statements.
Ercayan said: “I saw one person trying to force two young girls to go with him. I pulled one of the girls away by the hand.
“I said: ‘Aren’t you ashamed? These are children of just 15 or 16.’
“As I was closing the car door, my foot slipped and I fell. Then they got out of the vehicle and beat me.
“I only did my duty as a human being. Anyone in my position would have done the same.
“A child of this homeland is a child of all of us. Whether it was my own daughter or my neighbour’s daughter, I would step in again.”
After learning that the pair had been released, he said: “I want the law to hand down the punishment they deserve.
“I don’t want people like this living among us. If everyone knew their own humanity, these things would not happen.”
