Penguin ‘Artists’ Paint Colourful Patterns With Their Feet

These images show penguins becoming artists at an oceanarium by painting with their feet after different colours of paint were placed on the floor next to blank canvases for them to walk on.

The images were filmed at the Primorsky Oceanarium in Primorsky Krai, in far eastern Russia, on the occasion of an event called ‘Total Dictation’ on 5th April.

The pieces of art created by the Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti), which are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, were to be given out as prizes.

‘Total Dictation’, an annual Russian event to popularise literacy, saw 60 contestants test their spelling skills this year, with prizes including the works of art created by the penguins and others created by bottlenose dolphins.

The footage shows the cute penguins inspecting the paint on the ground before walking on it and walking on the canvas, leaving their footprints in different colours.

The Primorsky Oceanarium said in a statement: “Animals also joined the campaign – Pacific bottlenose dolphins and Humboldt penguins ‘wrote’ their alphabet with finger paints.

“The marine masterpieces will be presented as gifts to the top students of the dictation.”
