Parents Find Second Scorpion After Hospital Dash From First Attack

A two-month-old baby was stung by a scorpion while sleeping in her crib and when her horrified parents came home from hospital they found a second scorpion.

The incident happened in Fernandopolis, a city in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, on Sunday, 7th September.

Adrieli Rodrigues and Aryston Padua rushed their daughter to Santa Casa Hospital after they noticed her crying loudly before finding a sting on her leg and the scorpion inside the blanket.

The child was admitted and given anti-scorpion serum.

Doctors said she had severe symptoms on arrival, but after treatment she was discharged on Monday afternoon.

The hospital is the only one in the city with anti-scorpion serum for children aged between zero and 10 years.

The baby is now recovering at home.

Mum Adrieli said: “At every moment there in the hospital, we thought we might not be able to bring our daughter back home… Today we understand that our daughter was a miracle.”

The parents said they later found another scorpion at home after returning from the hospital.

According to the Fernandopolis Municipal Health Department, there has been an 18 per cent increase in accidents involving scorpions rising from 293 cases in 2024 to 369 this year.

Health officials said hot weather had driven scorpions out of sewers and increased the number of incidents.
