Newborn Whose Mum Died Of COVID Clapped Out Of Hospital

This is the moment a premature baby who was fighting for his life after his mother died from COVID-19 is applauded as he is carried out of hospital by his father.

Baby Jose Luis was born in General Hospital Number 1 in the city of Saltillo in the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila on 3rd April in the 36th week of his mother’s pregnancy.

His mother, a nurse whose name has not been reported, was diagnosed with COVID-19 and she had to undergo a cesarean as her condition was serious and medical staff were worried her baby could become infected.

The Mexican Institute of Social Insurance created a specialised surgery room for the operation which was a success but the mother later died.

The tot was taken to the intensive care unit in a serious condition but tested negative for COVID-19. He remained in hospital for 18 days before being discharged and in the video his father Pedro can be seen being applauded by medics as he takes the baby from the hospital.

The baby’s aunt Teresa can then be seen thanking the staff for their work.

Father Pedro said: “Thank you for the effort you made to allow the miracle of my son Jose Luis’ life. He is called Jose Luis as my wife wanted because that was the name of my father-in-law who also died a month ago.”

It is unclear what the father-in-law died from.

Maria Gabriela Gonzalez Yruegas, the Head of the Pediatric Unit at the hospital, told local media: “The baby could have been infected, not inside the mum, but after the birth, in the surroundings, as she was a transmissor of the virus”

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has registered 11,633 cases of COVID-19, and 1,069 deaths.
