Barcelona’s newest signing Junior Firpa has taken down a series of offensive tweets he posted about Lionel Messi calling the Argentine superstar a “son of a b*tch” and hoping “he dies”.
The Dominican-born full-back recently signed for Barcelona from Real Betis for 18 million EUR (16.54 million GBP) but has now had to remove a series of offensive tweets he wrote in 2012 about his club captain Lionel Messi.
In one post he called Messi a “son of a b*tch” and in another tweet he mentioned how he could “probably break both of Messi’s legs” with just “one kick”.
Another said: “I do not give a cr*p that sh*tty rat Messi got injured I hope he dies and stops scoring goals hahaha”.
The Spanish under-21 international told local newspaper Mundo Deportivo he was “only 15 years old and had a friend that was big a Barcelona and Messi fan” at the time he posted the offensive tweets.
He said: “I would say ugly things about Messi on Twitter to tease him. That is it, just some childish things”.
He added: “These are things from when you are 15 years old, when nobody knows you and when you cannot think that they will have repercussions years later”.
He was clear that he meant nothing by it and added he thinks Messi “is by far the best player in the world”, adding: “I always say the same thing when people talk about the Ballon d’Or: they had to give it to Messi off the bat and then make another award for the rest of the mortals and see who deserves it the most”.
Firpa, 22, made history by becoming the first Dominican-born player to play for Barcelona.
