Muslim hardliners have called for a ban on the African version of Big Brother, branding the hit reality TV show ‘satanic’ after the sexy contestants, pictured here, appeared on screen.
Big Brother Naija is screened across the African continent and has sparked fury among conservatives with its controversial characters and saucy antics.
The female stars of the latest series – including Mercy Eke and Precious Natasha – have set pulses racing with their daring outfits as seen in these pictures.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the government in Nigeria – where the Big Brother Naija show is filmed – to ban the reality show.
MURIC’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola accused the show of spreading immorality and branded it ‘dangerous and Bohemian’.
In a blog post, Akintola wrote: “.. do we not realize that for every single BB Naija inmate who wins a big amount of money and a car, more than 50 million young people are misled? Qur’an 30:41 says, ‘Evil has appeared on both land and sea as a result of the handiworks of men…’ The Bible in Ephesians 4:19 was also describing these people when it says, ‘Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.’”(sic)
Akintola also appealed to the country’s Christians to join in calls for a ban by quoting a string of verses from the Quran and the Bible.
He added: “Home is home. Moral debauchery knows no religion. The destructive influence of television shows like BB Naija penetrates both Christian and Muslim homes.”
The professor ended his statements by labelling the reality series a ‘curse on Nigeria’.
MURIC is known for its extreme views and outspoken comments.
Many netizens took to social media to criticise the conservative religious group.
One netizen called ‘sucre_ade’ said: “I’m a muslim, a very proud one to be exact, but the truth is that we have some very annoying conservative muslims like muric, this #BBNAIJA thing is a choice that’s why its being showed on dstv not local stations, ffs nigeria is not an islamic country so pipe the fuck down muric.”(sic)
Meanwhile another netizen, ‘amflomotion’, added: “MURIC is a disgrace to Islam.”
