Moment Woman Swims From Car As Storms Batter Majorca

This is the moment a female driver leaves her car stuck in the middle of a flooded street in Majorca and swims amid the torrents of water until she reaches the safety of a stone wall.

The incident took place during the heavy storms that hit Spain and the Balearic Islands and the video was recorded by onlookers in the Cala d’Or area of the town of Santanyi, in Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands.

In the video, the woman can be seen getting out of her car and swimming while trying not to be swept away by the current.

She then tries to reach a stone wall over which gallons of floodwater is spilling like a waterfall.

Local media report that only a few meters away from the scene of the incident, Spanish Civil Guard officers moved towards the street entrance to block people from becoming trapped or stranded in the floods.

The storm which hit the Balearic Islands on Tuesday, where 101 litres of water per square metre were recorded, has caused several problems on the island.

Roads were also blocked because of falling trees in the municipalities of Santanyi and Ses Salines.

Santanyi is one of the areas most damaged by the storm and there are media reports that the storm will continue today.

Local media reported that Aena, the Spanish airport operations company, said that the storm caused the diversion of eight flights that were supposed to arrive at the Balearic Islands though the countries they were coming from were not mentioned.

On the island of Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, 86.5 litres of water per square metres were recorded on Tuesday.

According to the State Agency of Meteorology in the Balearic Islands 58.8 litres per square metre were recorded at Ibiza airport.
