Moment Tangled Seal Saved By Rescuers In City River

This is the moment animal experts save a seal that was tangled in rope in a city river.

Pavel Glazkov, 47, a biologist from the Russian city of St Petersburg, shared the footage on Russian social network VK where it has been widely circulated.

Glazkov said the seal was saved from the Neva River that runs through the city centre after eyewitnesses noticed it swimming around in circles.

Suspecting the seal was caught up in a net, they called the local authorities.

Animal experts arrived to the river and managed to remove a rope that had been discarded in the river and become entangled around the poor seal.

According to local media, the seal struggled and managed to break free at one point during the rescue, but the animal handlers were able to retrieve it as it climbed the steps on the riverbank.

In the video, the seal is seen waddling up the steps as the animal experts follow in their boat and manage to grab the animal before it can get to street level.

According to local media, the seal was taken to the Friends of the Baltic Seal Fund for checks before being released into the wild.

Glazkov said: “It is incredibly, but true. Seals love to visit this particular place in Saint Petersburg, right in the city centre!

“A few years ago, also in spring, a grey seal cub managed to climb all the way to the top of the embankment.”
