Serbia’s interior ministry is hailing a miracle after a Virgin Mary icon remained completely intact after a family home burned to the ground and was then found by astonished firefighters.
The undamaged religious image was recovered from the ruins of a completely destroyed house following a fire in the town of Senta, in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.
Almost everything burned when the fire swept through the family home, Serbia’s Interior Ministry said on 14th December.
But the Virgin Mary icon, a Christian symbol of faith and hope for the homeowners, was found unharmed among the charred remains.

Firefighter Nenad Matijasevic recovered the icon while extinguishing the blaze and searching the property with a colleague from the fire and rescue unit in Senta.
Serbia’s Interior Ministry said firefighters do not only save buildings while battling flames, but also help people with the aftermath.
They said: “In moments when they fight the fire, firefighters save memories. And restore faith and those things that mean the most to people.”
The ministry added. “This is not just a miracle, this is a calling, this is humanity and this is the reality of firefighters.”
