The mayor says: “Do you eat lots of eggs? What else do you eat?”

The young girl answers: “Sweets.”

Chapman Moreno asks: “Sweets? Do you like to eat sweets? Lots of sweets?”

He then turns to her teacher and says in front of the child: “What is the problem with this girl? She is obese, awfully obese, horrible. Are you aware of that or not?”

The teacher says: “Because her mother gives the girl whatever she asks for, anytime she wants it. She is an only child and a little spoiled.”

According to local media, Manuel Guillermo Chapman Moreno, the mayor of Ahome in the north-western Mexican state of Sonora, has apologised to the girl’s family after the video sparked outrage.

He was visiting a school in the village of Goros Dos when he asked the girl, identified as Nancy N., about her diet.

The girl’s mother Nancy said that her daughter has diabetes and is currently on a healthy diet, adding that she is frequently checked by doctors.

The mayor’s comments sparked outrage after the footage was widely shared online.

Chapman Moreno promptly posted an apology on social media where he admitted to being “excessive” and claimed that he was “referring to the public health subject that is hurting us”.

He added: “It was never my intention to hurt the girl.”

According to local media, the mayor has also apologised to the student’s parents.

Meanwhile, education secretary Juan Alfonso Mejia Lopez criticised the teacher for not stopping the conversation when it became inappropriate.
