The incident followed the death of Mr. He’s pet poodle, which was reportedly off its lead when it approached the elderly man’s retriever and was killed in the subsequent fight.

According to local media, the retriever’s owner, identified as Mr Wang, was injured during the incident.

His elderly wife also arrived on the scene to protect her husband and dog, however she was also hospitalised during the suspect’s determined attempts to kill the retriever, according to reports.

Mr. Wang suffered a head injury while his wife hurt her back during the incident.

Meanwhile, Mr. He has been arrested by the local authorities.

The elderly victim said: “The golden retriever has been living with me for seven years, just like a family member. We always give it the best we can afford.

“We have spent 300,000 RMB (34,660 GBP) over these seven years. I request this amount in compensation, but the purpose is not for money. I am doing this to urge people stop violence!”

He also promised to donate the money to an animal charity if he is successful in his claim.

PETA Asia press officer for China, Keith Guo, told Asia Wire (AWR): “While PETA condemns all violence toward animals, we’re happy to see that the public is against to the violent action—it’s clear that people won’t stand for cruelty to animals and that the way the public views animals is changing.

“This incident is yet another reason why China must implement animal-welfare laws, for the sake of all animals and because the public demands it.”

The investigation is ongoing.
