A 25-year-old man from Hong Kong is facing the death penalty in Singapore after attempting to try and smuggle a GBP 300,000 haul of methamphetamine into the country hidden in two lion statues.
The man travelling from Hong Kong was arrested after suspicious police officers took a closer look at the statues and found 4.15kg (9.1 lbs) of methamphetamine, also known as ‘Ice’, hidden inside the base of the statues on 16th July.
The arrest was part of an operation cracking down on drug trafficking, and the man named Shi was apprehended in Singapore, where smuggling more than 250 grammes of the drug attracts the death penalty.

As a result of the investigation, police handed information to the Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigation and during the drug bust, officials saw the man handing over a cardboard box containing the statues to a logistics company.
He had apparently stored the statues in an air cargo warehouse in the city’s Changi South area.
The search is now on to find those who helped him in the operation to smuggle drugs into the country.
