The men, who all hail from the canton, reportedly marched in KKK gowns with conical hats, torches and a white power flag during the carnival in March in the cantonal capital which bears the same name.

According to newspaper reports, all the men admitted they had taken part in the march through the city of Schwyz.

The public prosecutor’s office has started a criminal investigation against them for suspected racial discrimination.

A 13th person who is believed to be a member of the same group is also being investigated.

When images of the KKK marching in the mountainous Swiss canton appeared they caused considerable shock throughout the country.

An informant who knows several people who took part in the KKK march reported that the event, despite taking place during carnival, was not a joke but a serious affair as the men under the conical hats were in fact known far-right extremists.

One informant said: “Those are people from the right-wing radical scene.”

The informant said that the people were also part of other extremist networks such as Blood and Honour and the Aryan Brotherhood.

The informant said: “It was not a prank. These neo-Nazis are battle-tested and prepared to use violence.”

Earlier this year, over 100 weapons including guns and machetes were seized in a massive police operation against the Ku Klux Klan in eight German federal states.

Twelve buildings were raided and searched by cops, who managed to seize more than 100 weapons ranging from firearms to swords and machetes from members of the German version of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) called the “National Social Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Deutschland”.

Seventeen suspects ranging in age between 17 to 59 years old, of whom three are female, are currently being investigated.

Investigator Ulrich Heffner explained that the German Federal Police “simply has the suspicion that they wanted to arm themselves” and “perhaps were planning something in one form or the other”.

He said: “The members are united in their right-wing mentality, which manifests itself among other things in a glorification of national-socialism.”

The KKK was originally founded in the Southern US states in the late 1860s.

The group advocates white supremacy, nationalism and anti-immigration policies.

Members are infamous for dressing up in white gowns with conical hats and torching crosses to intimidate opponents.
