Traffickers who were caught smuggling banned ivory carvings in their underwear have been seized by customs police in Austria.
The Polish nationals, aged 53 and 55, were transiting through Vienna Airport after a flight from Uganda when they were singled out for a full search in June.
Both men, reports local media, had illegal ivory artefacts stuffed down their briefs and are now facing smuggling charges.
When customs officers searched the pair’s luggage they also discovered an uncut diamond and what is believed to be a huge emerald.
They also unearthed an unknown animal tooth, 47 wooden carvings, five metal figures, and four swords.
The suspects are facing a fine of EUR 40,000 (GBP 33,700) each for the ivory trafficking alone, reports local media.
Austria’s Ministry of Finance said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The discovery of a total of five ivory carvings, hidden in the travelers’ underwear, was particularly severe.
“Additionally, one of the individuals was found carrying EUR 10,900 (GBP 9,182) in cash.”
Federal Minister of Finance Magnus Brunner, 52, said: “I thank all the employees of the Austrian Customs Office.
“Your tireless dedication and professionalism enable us to effectively protect endangered species and prevent illegal activities.
“Today’s discovery highlights how crucial your work is for the protection of threatened species.”
