iPhone Thief Arrested After Posting Wads of Cash Online

A crook arrested after posting on social media pictures of himself with huge wads of cash from the sale of stolen iPhones has been shot in the leg after trying to bite a police officer.

According to local police, Taufik Gani whose age was not given used the cash he made from illegal phone sales to go out partying around Bali and Jakarta, and posted images of himself living a VIP lifestyle to his over 60,000 Facebook followers.

But that was a far cry from later images showing him looking neglected and in a wheelchair after being shot in the leg when he tried to bite an arresting cop in the city of Manado in the northern Indonesian province of North Sulawesi.

He is accused of stealing 27 iPhones from his hometown, each valued at around 25 million IDR (1,340 GBP), with police sayi g they caught him because he posted a video of himself flaunting the cash on the music sharing platform Tik Tok which was widely shared by netizens.

Police spokesperson Sugeng Wahyudi Santoso told local media: “He did not save the money. He broke the money down to 50,000 IDR (2.7 GBP) notes and showed it off on social media and used it to party in Bali and Jakarta with his boyfriend.”

As well as the Tik Tok video, footage also shows Gani breaking into a phone shop, crying in police custody and pretending to be possessed as officers try to seat him in a wheelchair.

Local media said that he had been charged with burglary and could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty.
