This is the baffling moment an entire house is swallowed by a deep sinkhole that suddenly appeared at the edge of a fish pond in south-western China.
The disappearing act – caught on camera in the village of Wenxing, near Chongqing municipality – came after a giant hole appeared in the pond without warning.
First, it swallowed hundreds of exotic fish and all the water in the pond.
Then it gobbled up pond manager Lao Li’s house.
Footage of the drama – filmed by Li’s niece – shows pieces of concrete snapping off the edge of the pond as new cracks open up.
Then with a sudden wrench, the hole opens up and the house simply slides into it as Li and his wife watch on groaning in surprise.
After the hole first appeared Li told local police and government officials.
He said: “I walked over and took a look. The pit was so deep, I couldn’t tell how deep it was. I guess the water and fish have fallen into it.”
Meanwhile, the hole kept on growing.
The next morning, Li returned to find the hole had turned into what seemed like a bottomless pit and was expanding towards the small house.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
