A doctor in Germany has been jailed for nearly three years for providing over 1,000 fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates during the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr Bianca Witzsche, 67, is said to have raked in EUR 360,000 from flogging the bogus documents without even seeing the patients, the Regional Court in Dresden heard.
Witzsche, who has been jailed for two years and eight months, was convicted on charges covering 1,003 fake certificates which she sold for approximately EUR 30 (GBP 25) each.
The medic made more than EUR 30,000 on the certificates.
But police are still painstakingly investigating 11,000 other certificates, the court was told, and believe the final total could be EUR 360,000.
The medic has been linked to Germany’s shadowy far-right Reichsbuerger Movement, which wants to restore the country’s pre-World War II borders.
Earlier this year, Reichsbuerger members including a would-be prince, a judge and former military officers went on trial accused of a plot to overthrow Germany’s government.
It received a massive popularity boost during the Covid pandemic as conspiracy theorists attacked the government for restricting people’s movements.
Witzsche describes herself in documents as a member of the ‘Indigenous People of the Germanites’.
The trial reportedly took place amid tight security, with lead judge Juergen Scheuring facing constant interruptions from the doctor’s far-right supporters.
One person stood up and shouted that Witzsche had “saved so many people”.
Some screamed “shame on you” and “freedom” at the judges while others burst into the German national anthem, according to local media reports.
