A city in Germany has come up with a creative way to combat littering by introducing pizza recycling bins for the oversized boxes in several locations.
The so-called Pizzaboxes were installed at six locations around the city of Erfurt, Thuringia State, Germany, among which Nordpark, Bruehler Garten, Suedpark, Gothaer Platz, and the Stadtblick on 8th July.
Erfurt city authorities said the innovative solution followed due to the common problem of pizza boxes being improperly disposed of beside or atop regular garbage bins, as they often do not fit inside.
They said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “In case it’s folded the bulky box often clogs up public containers.”
They added: “The special waste containers are designed so that pizza boxes can be easily placed in them and stacked on top of each other.
“A roof over the bin protects the cardboard boxes from swelling in the rain. Only pizza boxes are to be disposed of in the special pizza box bins.
“Conventional waste continues to belong in the public waste bins as before.”
During the trial period, gardeners from the Garden and Cemetery Office will handle the initial emptying of the pizza boxes, said officials.
They said: “In order to evaluate the pilot project, the Erfurt city administration is also keen to hear the opinion of Erfurt’s citizens.
“An evaluation will be carried out in the autumn to determine how the new bin has been received.
“Ideally, even more pizza boxes will ensure a cleaner cityscape.”
