Geese Tortured For Fun At Chinese New Year Fair

This viral video with over five million views shows 40 terrified geese having plastic hoops thrown at them by kids and adults at a Chinese New Year fair.

Flowers, food and new year gifts are commonly found at traditional Spring Festival fairs, but a rural carnival in Shangqiu, a city in Central China’s Henan Province was found allowing the distressing game, which was reportedly very popular.

For just 10 RMB (1.14 GBP) a go, players of all ages were given seven plastic hoops, which they threw at the geese in a bid to enclose a bird’s neck, footage from the funfair shows.

Though incredibly difficult to achieve, those who successfully got their rings around a goose’s neck were ultimately allowed to take the bird home as a “trophy”.

However, the poor birds ended up repeatedly pelted with plastic hoops as players tried desperately to win them as prizes.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, said through a statement from its Asia office: “These terrified geese run back and forth within a small fenced-off area while plastic hoops strike their heads.

“They may not be able to change their fate, but that doesn’t mean they can be mistreated for the sake of entertainment.”

China currently has no laws against the mistreatment of domestic animals, such as cats, dogs and these geese.
