Forget Face Recognition: App Ids Pooches By Their Noses

Chinese techies are said to have developed a ‘high precision’ app that can identify pooches by the unique markers on their noses – in a method similar to the one used by human fingerprint technology.

Megvii Technology, which supplies facial recognition surveillance software to the Chinese authorities, say they have developed biometric software that recognises pooches by their snout with 95 percent accuracy.

Based on the idea that dogs have prints and markers on their nose similar to how humans have unique fingerprints, Chinese AI wizards believe they have come up with an app that is cheaper and less evasive than chip implants.

According to reports, all you need to do is point your phone’s camera at your dog’s face and the system will identify its nose markers and create a personalised profile on the database.

Many kennels around the world have already started registering nose prints for missing dogs, according to reports.

A basic method is to cover the animal’s nose with ink and make an impression against white paper or card.

However, Megvii’s digitised scanning system allows for the animal’s details to be added on a database and easily searched with “high precision”.

The Chinese company also claims that the app will recognise dogs by their noses with “95 percent accuracy”.
