Footage As Wildlife Reclaim France Amid COVID Lockdown

This footage shows deer and zebras roaming the city streets and a basking shark – the second biggest in the world – approaching a busy French port during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The first video, filmed in the Parisian suburb of Boissy-Saint-Leger on 12th April, shows two fallow deer roaming a deserted street.

According to the commune mayor Regis Charbonnier, the deer belong to the Chateau du Piple which has about a hundred of them.

The mayor said: “It is not uncommon to see them crossing the road at night but never in the middle of the day and in the centre of the town. It’s quite exceptional!”

In the second video, filmed in Champigny-sur-Marne in the south-eastern suburbs of Paris, several escaped horses and a zebra are seen galloping along a busy road at night.

The cameraperson says: “Oh wow, feels like we’re in Kenya. This is a safari!”

According to local media, the animals belonged to the Badin circus in the neighbouring town of Ormesson-Sur-Marne.

Circus director Mr Moulot said: “During the day, the horses live in their trailer and in the evening they are locked in their enclosure.

“That’s where the two horses and the zebra ran away from on 10th April.”

The circus boss believes local residents may have set them loose for fun.

The third video shows a basking shark, the second biggest in the world after the whale shark, swimming with its mouth open, feeding on plankton in the clear water.

The incident was filmed at the Port of Brest in the north-western French department of Brittany.

Reports said the shark was four metres (13 feet) long.

According to local media, the shark’s appearance in the port was helped by the high tides and decrease in port activity due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
