This is the ‘David and Goliath’ moment a fearless pooch goes to war with a huge lioness as she tries to the eat the dog for lunch – and even manages to knock the predator off her feet.
The video was filmed in the Gir Forest National Park in India’s westernmost state of Gujarat and posted on social media where it has been widely circulated.

In the footage, the dog is seen walking through the forested area as an Asiatic lioness (Panthera leo leo) appears and suddenly attacks it.
Using its strong paws and fangs to attack the dog’s neck, the big cat tries to trap and kill its prey on the ground.
However, the brave pooch barks at the lion and fights back, even managing to knock the lioness down at one point.
Seemingly stunned by the plucky pooch’s effective defence, the lioness falls silent and allows the dog to run off.
In the next scene, the unlikely pair walks along a forest road together.
The Gir Forest National Park is a wildlife sanctuary that was established to protect Asiatic lions which frequent the fenced-off Devalia Safari Park along with leopards and antelopes.
The Gir Jungle Trail, situated just outside the fenced area, crosses through the forest and is home to a rich array of wildlife including vultures and pythons.
