Exquisite 5.72-Carat Blue Diamond Ring Goes Under The Hammer For GBP 6.9 Million In New York

This exquisite 5.72-carat blue diamond ring has gone under the hammer at Christie’s in New York for GBP 6.9 million.

Christie’s said that the Fancy Intense Blue diamond surpassed its estimated value and sold for USD 8,805,000 (GBP 6.96 million), making it the “second-highest price achieved for a jewel in 2024 globally”.

Newsflash obtained a statement from Christie’s New York on 10th December saying: “Christie’s New York Luxury Week continued with Magnificent Jewels. In total, the sale achieved USD 49.2 Million, selling 97 per cent by lot with global participation of buyers coming, 62 per cent from Americas. 21 per cent from Europe and 17 per cent from APAC [Asia-Pacific].”

Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewelry, said: “Today’s sale in New York was a testament to the vibrant market for jewellery of the highest calibre with singular provenance.

“We were particularly pleased with the result of the top lot – a fantastic fancy intense blue diamond ring that sold for USD 8.8 million.

“We also were deeply honoured to sell jewels from several of the world’s most esteemed private collectors, including Mica Ertegun.

“Offering this selection of jewellery hailing from the collection Mica Ertegun was a tribute to her brilliant eye. And we are thrilled by the exceptional outcome.”

Mica Ertegun was a Romanian-American interior designer and philanthropist who died in December 2023 aged 97. The brooch in the photograph was from her collection.

She married Ahmet Ertegun, the co-founder of Atlantic Records in 1961 after moving to New York.

Christie’s said: “The sale kicked off to a strong start, with an offering of exquisite jewellery from MICA: THE COLLECTION OF MICA ERTEGUN. Throughout the 16-lot selection, prospective buyers actively demonstrated excitement, with lively and enthusiastic bidding coming globally from clients in the room, on the phones and tuning in online.

“The group was 100 per cent sold, with over 80 per cent of the lots achieving more than double their low estimate. The grouping far surpassed expectations to achieve USD 2,604,460—nearly six times its low estimate of USD 461,000.

“The highest price within the collection came for a Cartier Art Deco Multi-Gem and Diamond Brooch, which after a fierce bidding battle realized USD 1,381,000. More than ten times its low estimate of USD 100,000.”
