Ex-racing driver Andrew Turnbull – who was facing claims of domestic abuse against his former partner- has died in a high-speed smash with another vehicle, killing three.
The accident took place on the R72 route near Port Alfred in the southern South African province of Eastern Cape.
In a clip believed to have been filmed earlier in the day by Turnbull’s friend and passenger, Ryan Byrne, the former racing driver’s Jaguar is seen travelling at over 260kph (162mph).
Turnball and the 20-year-old passenger both reportedly died in a high-speed crash with a Mercedes later that day, the owner of which also died.
Byrne and the unnamed Mercedes driver died on the scene while Turnbull succumbed to his injuries in hospital the next day, according to reports.
Turnbull’s mother Martha said on social media: “Andrew, our only son and brother to Lindy, passed away in the early hours.
“His friend Ryan Byrne died at the scene. I am begging everyone to please give us time to mourn and to stop the horrible stuff that is being posted. We are heartbroken.”
According to local media, Turnbull was out on bail after being charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend Chere Gray in August last year.
In a separate case, Turnbull was also reportedly accused of drug and ammunition possession. After a successful application‚ he was released on bail.
The investigation into the three deaths is ongoing.
