Former Austrian international striker Sanel Kuljic has been sentenced to one year in prison after he was detained for possession of cocaine and a firearm.
The sentencing comes after Kuljic,42, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking at a court in the Austrian capital of Vienna after he was reportedly detained on 20th September at his pregnant wife’s shop.
Kuljic was reportedly also accused of possession of firearms as a gun was found at the shop where he was detained.
Local media report Kuljic is being held in a prison in the Josefstadt district located in Vienna after he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after selling 80 grams of cocaine between the years 2017 and 2019.
Local media report the sentence could be changed if he goes to a rehabilitation clinic to receive help for his alleged cocaine addiction after he reportedly confessed to having substance abuse problems.
Kujlic also made headlines in 2014 when he received a five-year sentence for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal however he was released in the spring of 2017 for good behaviour.
He played for several top-flight clubs such as Austria Wein and Swiss club Sion and is most widely recognised for his participation in the Austrian national team between 2005 and 2007 scoring three goals in 20 appearances.
It is unclear if Kuljic will decide to go to a rehabilitation clinic or serve his sentence in prison or if there is a deadline to make the decision.
