Gardners caught using hosepipes to water their lawns in Germany are facing massive EUR 50,000 fines under strict new drought laws.
As summer heatwave temperatures top 30 degrees Celsius, city officials in Hannover, Lower Saxony, have declared emergency measures to preserve drinking water supplies.
Despite winter floods, they say water reserves in and around the city are nearly exhausted.

And predictions of further sunny dry weather through summer mean lakes and rivers could run dry.
Now, anyone caught using tap water on their gardens or to wash cars when the daytime temperature is higher than 27 degrees Celsius will be fined, reports local media.
The six-day ban, from 25th June, will also cover swimming pools and farmland.
