A waiter who was left a measly EUR 2 tip by a stingy customer is set to make a mint after discovering the rare coin is apparently worth EUR 3,000.
The EUR 2 (GBP 1.77) coin had been left a miserly gratuity for a EUR 42 (GBP 37.18) bill at a cafe in Benevento, the capital of Benevento Province, in the Campania region of south-central Italy, near Naples, Italy.
But Osteria Leone cafe waiter Mario Leone was astonished when he apparently discovered that the coin is believed to be so rare it is worth a fortune.
His TikTok footage – now with more than 4.4 million views – of the tip appears to show his coin next to a nearly identical one for sale on eBay for EUR 3,000 (GBP 2,653), apparently featuring a number of imperfections that would make it a rare collector’s item.
Mario captioned the footage: “Was he aware of that, do you think?”
And he reportedly said: “I thank the gentleman who unknowingly left me a EUR 3,000 tip.”
The video had over 125,000 likes at the time of writing.
Most Netizens were visibly impressed, with ‘Paul Velocci’ saying: “I would show the coin to an expert. If it is really worth EUR 3,000, that is incredibly lucky.”
And ‘Francesco Gonzini’ said: “Gorgeous!”
But others were more suspicious, with ‘Miche Valz’ saying: “The fact that you put it on eBay for EUR 3,000 doesn’t mean that they’ll buy it from you.”
It was unclear at the time of writing if the coin had been inspected by a numismatics expert.
