English Teacher Fakes TB So He Can Go On Holiday

An English teacher who bought a fake tuberculosis diagnosis online so he could go on holiday has been caught out after officials hauled him in for further tests.

Upon presenting his dodgy diagnosis, the school tested his pupils and two turned out to have contracted it causing the the teacher to be called in for further tests and unearthing his ploy.

English teacher Mr Du, 23, took sick leave by providing a scan of a TB patient’s lungs

Mr Du, 23, teaches at a privately-run cram school in the city of Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in North China.

The man teaching English as a second language to young children around the age of five reportedly paid 480 RMB (52 GBP) for a fake chest scan and diagnosis online, which he provided his employers as well as the parents of his 18 pupils.

But between 10th October, when he handed in his sick notice, and 31st October, the cram school was forced to pay for all of of Mr Du’s pupils to be checked for signs of TB after parents raised concerns.

Things then took an unexpected twist when two children tested positive for the disease, leaving Mr Du having to fake a second diagnosis – at the cost of 320 RMB (35 GBP) – proving he was now clear of the illness, which usually requires months of daily antibiotics.

But Mr Du’s second set of hospital documents did not convince the parents, who pressured him into taking a third test at a Hohhot hospital, which proved not only that he had been clean of TB all along, but also that the previous chest scans he provided belonged to another person entirely.

His two sick pupils, it seemed, contracted the disease from another source.

They were pulled from the class, but parents were left with more questions than answers, and had serious concerns over the competence of the school’s management.

Subsequent tests proved Mr Du was free from TB

Mr Du, who parents said was popular among pupils, later made a public apology in front of all his pupils’ parents.

He revealed he wanted to take an extended holiday and use China’s National Day break to have some lengthy time off.

Fearing his first lie would be exposed, he decided to lie again to try and cover it up, he added.

Mr Du admitted he did not realise how serious TB was when he chose to use it as his sick leave excuse.

Parents have told local media they are demanding further assurance that management at the school will improve, but did not say whether they would seek to involve officials with the city’s education bureau.

Cram school director Ms Zhang said she was in the process of visiting every affected family in order to collect their feedback.

Ms Zhang did not say whether Mr Du would keep his job.
