Former drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has ordered for Mexico’s President to be protected from harm whenever he enters the cartel boss’ home state of Sinaloa.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador recently visited the state of Sinaloa and El Chapo’s lawyer Jose Luis Gonzalez Meza has now said the ex-boss of the Sinaloa Cartel had ordered for the president to be protected.
Speaking to journalist Azucena Uresti for Radio Formula, Meza said that the president was not in any risk in Sinaloa, which he referred to as ‘El Chapo land’, with the former kingpin ordering for nobody “to hurt the president anytime he goes to Sinaloa, the president will be protected”.

Meza said El Chapo’s protection came as he saw Obrador as a humanitarian and a Christian after he accepted a letter signed by the drug lord’s mother Maria Consuelo Loera Perez during the trip to Sinaloa.
Meza had given the letter to the president, who was filmed shaking El Chapo’s mother’s hand during his trip, at a government event in La Tuna. The letter asked the president for help in allowing El Chapo’s mother to visit him in prison in the United States.
He said: “I talked with a person from his team, I gave him the letter and I told him that we were going to be there and if the president could stop there if it was not a problem”.
The lawyer added: “The only thing that concerns the family of El Chapo is that, if he was extradited illegally, the government should take judicial responsibility.”
After the video of the president shaking the drug lord’s mother’s hand caused outrage, the politician said: “An elderly person deserves all my respect, no matter who her son is. Sometimes I have to shake the hand of white-collar criminals and I have never lost your respect, who am I to refuse to shake the hand of a lady?”
