Dutch Theme Park Removing Attraction After BLM Protesters Dubbed It Racist

Theme park goers have flocked for the last ride on the controversial “Mr Cannibal” attraction that includes a large black man with a decoration through his nose supervising cooking pots in which people sit.

Over 1,500 people signed a petition to remove the Monsieur Cannibale attraction from the Efteling Theme Park in the Dutch village of Kaatsheuvel last year.

The attraction, critics have long said, portrays a racist caricature, and the campaign to get it removed received new impetus in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests last year.

The park had initially argued against the removal saying that the attractions in the park were an amalgamation “of characters from stories, myths and sagas”.

The attraction Monsieur Cannibale, that will be removed from Efteling theme park after 33 years, on Sunday evening (5 September) was the last ride.

However, the park seemed to change tack, and the decision was eventually taken to remove the attraction, prompting fans to turn up for one last ride on Sunday, 5th August.

Theme park goers sat in the attraction’s rotating cooking pots wearing party hats, singing loudly and applauding, clearly unashamed of their enthusiasm for a ride dubbed “racist” by many others.

An employee was also happy to mark the occasion announced: “Dear guest, this was the cannibal’s last round ever. Hope you had a fantastic day.”

Monsieur Cannibale has been a mainstay of the park for 33 years, but will now be replaced by Sinbad the Sailor.

The Instagram account Efteling Kiekjes (Efteling Snapshots) wrote on Monday, 6th September: “Monsieur Cannibale, I’m going to miss you!”

Monuments and memorials around the world have been removed in the wake of the BLM protests last year.

Some examples include London’s statue of Robert Milligan, which was removed by local authorities, and Bristol’s statue of Edward Colston, which was toppled by protesters.

In the wake of such actions, the Dutch protesters had argued the very least was for the clearly racist ride also to be removed.
