Dortmund Commentators Do Hitler Parody During Match

Two Borussia Dortmund commentators and former players have been sanctioned for making racist remarks and doing a “Hitler parody” during a match.

The incident came during the recent friendly between Borussia Dortmund and Italian side Udinese Calcio as former Dortmund players Patrick Owomoyela, 39, and Norbert Dickel, 57, were commentating on the match for the club’s in-house media.

The comments were mainly directed at the last names of some of the Italian players.

They likened Kevin Lasagna’s name to the popular Italian dish lasagna and called Ignacio Prussetto “prosecco” after the popular Italian sparkling wine.

They also referred to the people that live in the Italian city of Udine, where Udinese Calcio is based, as Itaker -a well-known derogatory term used to refer to Italians in Germany since the sixties.

To make matters worse, Owomoyela is said to have “parodied Hitler”. Local media outlet Westdeutscher Rundfunk Koln (WDR) report Owoyomela made a comment about “battles” being fought in a “Hitlerian tone” when speaking about the game.

According to the local media, Borussia Dortmund have sanctioned the two former players and they are not currently commentating on games. Dickel, however, will work as the stadium announcer of Dortmund.

Former defender Owomoyela played for Dortmund between 2008 and 2013, making 76 appearances whilst ex-striker Dickel represented the club from 1986 until 1990.

The scandal comes after Clemens Tonnies, Schalke Director, said that Africans would stop “cutting down trees and making babies when it gets dark” if people invested in power plants in Africa instead of raising taxes to battle climate change.

He made the comments when speaking about the subject in Paderborn located in North West Germany report German newspaper Neue Westfalische.
