This is the moment a dolphin swims in Venice’s famous canals which are now empty of boat traffic during the second week of lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
A number of dolphins were reportedly spotted in Venice’s canals due to the isolation of the human population and a decrease in pollution, according to Italian media.
One video of a dolphin swimming close to a dock has been viewed 305,000 times on Twitter.

Reports also said that large schools of fish have returned to the canals, as seen in a second clip that was shared on Twitter by netizen ‘Venezia Pulita’ that has been seen 136,000 times.
The footage shows schools of fish swimming in the crystal-clear waters behind the Piazza San Marco.
Local media said the water’s clarity is attributed to the absence of boat traffic on the city’s canals.

Meanwhile, the European Space Agency (ESA) has registered a significant drop in the presence of nitrogen dioxide emissions over the Po Valley in northern Italy.
Venice has had to cancel many of its important festivals and events due to the lockdown in the country.
As of 18th March, Italy has 31,506 confirmed cases of COVID-19 while 2,503 deaths have been reported.
