Doctors Keep Severed Ear Alive In Patients Abdomen

Doctors have buried this piece of a patient’s ear in his abdomen to keep it alive after it was bitten off during a Mike Tyson-style scrap and could not be reattached until it had partially healed.

Doctor Ren Jie, who is a plastic surgeon at Xi’an Central Hospital, says the unnamed man’s left ear was too badly injured.

He was taken to the hospital in Xi’an, capital of north-western China’s Shaanxi Province, after he lost the entire top portion of his left ear during the fight, in which his opponent bit onto it and ripped it off.

Doctor Ren said: “The patient’s face was covered in blood, and his left ear was partially missing.”

The medic also explained how he and his team are keeping the ear alive under the patient’s skin.

He said: “Because it had been detached for a long period of time, we weren’t able to reattach it right away. We therefore decided to treat him in two stages:

“First, we buried his severed ear inside his abdomen and cleaned his wounds.

“When his wounds have fully healed, we’ll retrieve the ear and sew it back, repairing the other damage using skin grafts.”

Reports did not reveal whether the Mike Tyson-style Chinese New Year scrap has led to any arrests.
