Meet the VW Golf GTI enthusiast who has just driven 12,000 kilometres from China to meet with like-minded petrol heads for an annual meet at Austria’s Woerthersee Lake.
The annual ‘GTI Meet’ event which this year was estimated to attract around 120,000 fans first took place 30 years ago and has grown since then to attract fans from all over Europe.
But this year the fan from China, Jeffery Li, beat all other new arrivals after making a 12,000-kilometre (7456-mile) journey along with his passenger Calven Li so he could also take part.
Hundreds of police turn up to keep the peace at the annual event which usually involves numerous speeding tickets and other motoring offences before it ends this weekend on Sunday.
Jeffery, who is the owner of a 30-year-old Volkswagen Passat, set off from his home in the Chinese city of Guangzhou several weeks ago in order to ensure he turned up in time. And this week he finally reached Lake Woerthersee together with his passenger Calven where they were given a warm welcome.
He said: “It was like a dream when I finally realised that I had arrived in Velden on the Woerthersee Lake.”
This year, police spokesman Adolf Winkler from the Carinthian transport police said: “We want to make sure that irresponsible drivers do not spoil it for the rest, check that technical modifications are legal and remove any cars that appear to breach basic safety rules.”
