A German dad who threw his two-month-old daughter out of the window of their second-floor flat to her death has finally been jailed for 15 years more than four years after it happened.
The incident that shocked the country happened when the child’s dad identified only as 36-year-old David L. because of local privacy laws grabbed his daughter Senna in the rented property on Kantstrasse in the city of Karlsruhe in the southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
He then threw her out the window in front of the baby’s mother, identified only as Jesmira S. who at the time was aged 19.
When he eventually appeared in court, his lawyer Alexander Klein requested that his client be freed, saying that at the time he was under the influence of drugs and suffering from hallucinations.
However, the judge found that the intentional killing of a defenceless child was proven, and he has was sentenced for murder which has now been confirmed by the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe.
He was also charged with kidnapping and assault after he attacked Jesmira and his other daughter Joana, 6, from a previous marriage with a knife.
He will now start his 15-year sentence after managing to effectively delay proceedings for four years from when the girl was killed in May 2016. The assault and kidnapping charges were also carried out around the same time and included in the sentence.
Numerous legal complications – including the local court being unable to find enough time to hear the case and the changing of the trial judge – constantly delayed things.
As a result, the now-convicted killer who divorced his first wife with whom he had four children, had complained about being kept in pre-trial detention for so long, the court ordered him released unconditionally.
He has however now been arrested after the final judgement by the appeal court.
