Council Gardeners Find Solid Gold Bars While Mowing Grass

A group of council workers were left stunned after they uncovered 10 gold bars while mowing the grass.

The incredulous gardeners discovered the gold during grass-cutting around a stormwater retention basin in Bannewitz in Saxony, Germany, on 17th October.

The workers first found eight gold bars in the wet grass and then later discovered two more.

The bars were individually sealed in hard plastic cases.

The workers alerted the municipal authority, which then notified the police.

Police spokesperson Marko Laske said: “We are now investigating whether the gold is connected to a crime.”

He said there were currently no indications of a criminal offence.

Authorities estimated the value of the gold at around EUR 30,000 (GBP 26,460).

Police said they were checking the serial numbers to determine whether they could identify the rightful owner.

The gold was secured while the investigation continued.

If no owner was found and no crime was identified, the gold could pass to the municipality of Bannewitz.

Mayor Heiko Wersig, 43, said the municipality was developing a new grants guideline for local clubs.

He said he would use the gold as the financial base for this if it became municipal property.

Bannewitz has around 11,000 residents.
