A man suffering from a violent cough has undergone surgery after spitting out his entire right tonsil.
Images show the tonsil ejected from the man’s mouth following the fit.
The patient named only as ‘Xiaowu’ is from the city of Yiwu in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province.
He told doctor Feng Qiang at Yiwu Central Hospital that the bloody piece of flesh he heaved up was still attached to his throat – so he apparently shoved it back in his mouth.
Doctor Feng said the dark red growth measuring roughly 1 by 0.8 inches was visible on the right side of Xiaowu’s throat.
He diagnosed him with a tumour and admitted him, leaving Xiaowu worrying about possibly throat cancer.
In surgery, however, a closer inspection of the growth revealed to a shocked Feng and his colleagues that Xiaowu had in fact coughed up his grossly swollen right tonsil.
Xiaowu revealed that he had been experiencing coughing fits, which sometimes involved blood, and that he also dry-heaved.
Doctor Feng rediagnosed the patient with tonsilitis, affecting only his right side.
The tonsil was removed and Xiaowu is reportedly recovering well after being discharged.
