A German hunter called police when he found a bazooka and over 100 Russian grenades from World War II hidden in the woods.
As well as 100 Russian grenades he also found 20 grenades that could be fired from a rifle, a hand grenade and 25 pieces of infantry ammunition.
The discovery took place in a forest near Pasewalk, in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, leading the authorities to secure the ordnance and secure the perimeter, which was thoroughly searched on Thursday afternoon.
That is when the authorities found “220 more throwing grenades, a German bazooka, two hand grenades and 10 pieces of infantry ammunition”, according to a statement from the local police.
Much of the ordnance was found at a depth of one metre underground. It is currently unclear what it was doing there but the police statement said “it is believed to date back to World War II (WWII) and the site was either the location of a bunker or it was a defensive position”.
During the Battle of Berlin, during World War II, Pasewalk was captured by troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front of the Red Army on 28th April 1945.
